Adults, most of us at least, have very little patience for learning, or rather, very little patience for making mistakes. We have long ago forgotten how many tries it took us to pronounce difficult words, tie our shoes (so they stayed tied!), say what we mean, play the right note, or dribble the ball. How many successes have we missed because it would be embarrassing for anyone to see us fail?
So even when it makes a mess, creates a scene, or turns a one-minute task into a ten-minute task, I try not to freak out on my kids when those first attempts miss the mark, in the hope that they will hang on to that courage to learn as long as possible.
